Shelby County, Tenn. — As District 9 prepares for a transition in representation, Shelby County Commissioner Matthew Szalaj is hosting a community transition meeting to bring residents, community leaders, and neighborhood organizations together with incoming Commissioner-elect Karen Streeter. The community meeting will be held TODAY, Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Southwest Tennessee Community College – Whitehaven Center.
With Commissioner Szalaj’s tenure nearing its conclusion and Commissioner-elect Streeter preparing to assume the District 9 seat next month, this meeting is an opportunity to support a smooth transition, ensure that projects, priorities, and concerns remain at the forefront, and answer any questions.
A government 101 workshop will also take place for residents to participate in, led by Raquel Miranda Capocaccia, Vice President of Development at New Memphis. Topics discussed may include neighborhood safety, crime prevention, access to community resources, and other residents' concerns.
